NAB’s Army of Happy Tappers with NAB Pay
Whatever your opinion on banks, it’s hard to say ‘no’ to a $1 burger. And if that’s a burger from Burgers By Josh, you’d pretty much be throwing your money at the banks in hungry desperation. Except that NAB’s new NAB Pay offering doesn’t need physical cash or even a card; it lets you make payWave purchases using just an Android phone.
Think stack-high American burgers with dripping sauce and multiple patties for the truly brave, all for only $1. That was the opportunity afforded to us at the recent NAB Happy Tappers event in Sydney. Teaming up with popular Instagrammer @nickalfie, we explored the inaugural burger pop-up located just outside Australia Square.
In fact, NAB had been offering its customers heavily discounted food all week, starting with $1 bento boxes on the Monday and ending with $1 burgers on the Friday. You might think people already love burgers, but experience shows they love a good promotion even more. Add the two together and you have a large queue of NAB customers excitedly lining up on one of the busiest streets in Sydney, hoping to be one of the first 500 to reach the till.
So let’s talk burgers for a second. Our buddy @nickalfie was maniacal enough to opt for a triple-patty cheeseburger, while we settled less ambitiously for the vegetarian burger. With spicy mayonnaise dripping dangerously from the inside, you’d think the burgers were hard to eat. Surprisingly, this wasn’t the case. They struck a good balance between taste and not disastrously falling apart, so neither of us ended up embarrassing ourselves too badly.
Next comes the real question. You might be able to tempt our stomachs with food, but can you influence our payment habits with new technology? Possibly. For the payment method itself, what’s needed for initial set-up is a compatible NAB card, a compatible phone and the Android NAB app. Following that, you’re able to make purchases by placing the back of your phone against a card reader.
And you know what? If that process is robust enough to deliver 500 burgers to 500 hungry customers in a timely fashion, there just might be something there.
