Melbourne’s Emporium Officially Opens

In as camp a display of glitter, confetti, colour and whimsy as you’d imagine from the 50s, legendary Australian master of the big screen and theatre worldwide, Baz Luhrmann let 1500 Melburnians and a plethora of other random folks play in his fantasy world. And what a world it was.

Melbourne’s Emporium held its official opening party in the shadow of 225 of its residential retail stores to welcome the new retail haven of the city to the game. Boasting __ square metres of space right in the heart of Melbourne, Emporium Melbourne is a fabulously new and exciting space that has already played stage to a huge influx of international retailers.

Occupying the entire ground floor of the shopping centre, the celebrations marred a quiet Wednesday night with theatrical performances of Gatsby proportions. Let’s just say a feather boa and flapper dresses were most definitely not a dime a dozen.

As waiters pouring champagne wheeled themselves skilfully around on roller skates, waitresses dodged graduatingly intoxicated guests with their trays of seafood and other hors d’oeuvres and Baz Luhrmann commanded as much attention as one of his level of notoriety would, the party grew rowdier.

And all to celebrate the fact that with as much turmoil and change in the retail landscape as there is in this country at the moment, something good can still arise. From the flurry of the changing of hands at David Jones, introductions of retailers like H&M, Uniqlo and Zara in recent months and years, Melbourne has won the battle and emerged victorious against those who said it wouldn’t. For a city voted the best to live in the world, it kind of makes sense.

From the beyond-life sized Hollywood lit red carpet to the models in small stilts to the army of male dancers in military uniforms and the endless streams of confetti falling from the ceiling onto bands and live performers the party was nothing short of spectacular. Baz Luhrmann’s creative direction as a stylish man himself for a building now in Melbourne’s heart that wreaks of the same style with which is was officially opened, Melbourne’s Emporium shopping centre will travel in nothing but leaps and bounds.

In what cost a small fortune for the opening bash alone, you’d hope so.
