The Melbourne Cabaret Festival is as camp as ever

Chapel off Chapel was buzzing with some of this year’s brightest cabaret talent for the Melbourne Cabaret Festival opening gala, hosted by the festival’s fabulous artistic director, the dazzling drag superstar, Dolly Diamond.

It gave sensational rise to a diverse range of acts that will all be taking part in the festival this year, from a Motown trio, a girl-power a capella quartet and a powerhouse performance by one of Australia’s finest musical theatre and cabaret performers.

Of the great performers from the opening night gala the standouts were many but most memorable were Pisca (Cameron Taylor) whose unique cabaret style mixed with physical theatre is one to leave the audience mesmerised and begging for more.

The four ladies from Ginger and Tonic: For Love or Money (Laura Burzacott, Jane Patterson, Rebecca Moore, and Danielle O’Malley) had the audience on the edge of their seats, laughing out loud to their amazing a capella performance blending iconic songs  like Eye of the Tiger with their own originally written songs entitled Shannon Bennet, Come and Get It, and Freeze your Ovaries accompanied by hilarious group choreography.

The most memorable performance, however was by the entrancing Queenie van de Zandt whose beautiful study of the songs of Joni Mitchell in her show Blue: The Songs of Joni Mitchell allowed the audience access to the world of the iconic singer-songwriter while pulling at our heartstrings with her incredible voice.

You can catch all the shows in the Festival at Chapel Off Chapel from Tuesday 20th June to Sunday 2nd of July. See more at the website.
