Common household hazards and how to deal with them

Living room house

Keeping the house in tip top condition is something which is always super important as a homeowner. When you buy your first home and start to look after it you will start to notice the same hazards and issues become common in the home.

Today we want to talk about how to deal with some of the most common issues which affect us in our homes.

Asbestos

Although this is something no one wants to have in their homes, it is a common occurrence and unfortunately it can affect many of our homes. If your house is fairly old this is more likely and if you ever find traces you should get Rapid Asbestos Removal on the case right away and don’t try to solve it yourself.

Fungus gnats

If you have a lot of houseplants in the home you may have noticed now and again that there are some small fungus gnats which dominate the space around your home. These small black flies are harmless but they can be a nuisance and there are some simple ways that you can get rid of them by using sticky traps and also watering your plants with 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 4 parts water.

Mites

Storage mites, white mites and flour mites are a pest. They are common in the home and when you notice them on your surfaces it is very likely that they have already spread far and wide. Small pests like this will be hard to get rid of but with some clever cleaning and food source finding you should be able to get rid of them within a few weeks. Look for the largest build up of mites and get rid of the food source. Empty, bleach, and vacuum every surface for a few days until you can no longer see any signs. After this make sure to keep the home clean in the future.

Falls

One of the most common household hazards of all is falling down. No matter what your age, falls can be dangerous and they can lead to some serious issues down the line. Make sure that you always get rid of loose cables and never leave items sticking out. Be sure that you are conscious every day about where you are walking and this will make all the difference to you when you are in the home.

Fires

Fires are a huge hazard and always a huge risk in the home. Fires can be caused by a number of things such as electrical appliances and too much clutter, so make sure that you take the time to clean the home of clutter to stop the spread of there ever is a fire, and also be sure to check the health of electrical appliances often to ensure that they are working correctly. Also, make sure to install a fire alarm in the home in a prominent place.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide is a dangerous thing and it is something which can be incredibly poisonous to us at any age. It is important to make sure that you never let your Home gain exposure to this because it is completely odourless and therefore can actually kill you without you knowing. To ensure that this doesn’t happen make sure that you install a detector and alarm in the home.

Choking

Choking is a very common issue in the home and if you have children or pets then it is an issue you really need to look out for in your home life. Small children and animals like to chew things. They will often look for things to chew on and this can include cables and fabrics and also small toys and items. Be sure that you keep your small items in check in the home and out of reach from your children and pets to ensure that they stay safe and healthy.

Burns

Burns are a common thing to happen in the home and there are many places where someone could burn themselves. For example, if you have a kettle, a boiler out in the open, pipes, bathtubs and taps… there are plenty of chances for you to burn yourself before you have even got near to the oven. When using the microwave always protect the hands from burns and be sure to take measures when using a hot tap or even a radiator.

Cuts

Cuts can come from anywhere. Some books, paper, knives, pieces of metal… and they are common at home. To reduce the risk of cuts to your person this year it is important for you to put away sharp items and make sure sharp edges are never out in the open for people to catch.

Drowning

Drowning is something which is much more of a risk for animals and children in the home but it can happen to anyone. When you fill a tub of water or a bath, be sure that it is kept out of reach from children and pets and make sure that if they are in the bath, you monitor them constantly to ensure that they are safe.

Poison

Poison is something which you might not think of immediately as a problem at home but if you have children or pets this is a real issue and risk. When you have things such as cleaning supplies at home it is important for you to keep them locked away from children and pets who may want to taste it because of the bright colours. Also be sure that you lock away washing tablets and detergent because this can be a huge issue for children as they might look at a tide pod and think it is a sweet. Also if you have a garage, keep cats away from antifreeze because cats will often be attracted to the taste but it will kill them within days of they consume it.
