Kinky Boots Is On In Melbourne!

A star exploded onto the stage at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Wednesday in the form of Callum Francis playing the role of Lola, the explosive, outspoken, and fabulous drag queen at the centre of the newest musical to hit Melbourne, Kinky Boots.

Francis had an undeniable presence that grabs the audience and doesn’t let go. His vocals were impeccable and effortless, his energy was infectious, and his storytelling ability was entrancing and touching.

Throughout the arc of the show Lola never misses a beat and in turn Francis’ portrayal led the amazingly talented ensemble through some beautifully choreographed group numbers. The glitz and glamour of Lola’s world was brought to life in the intricate costumes worn by her and her Angels and by the cleverly designed set that transformed seamlessly between the factory town of North Hampton and the cosmopolitan city of London.

The other shining light on the night was Sophie Wright in the role of Lauren, the unlikely love interest of the story’s ‘straight man’ character, Charlie. Wright’s impeccable comedic timing and enviable vocal talent made her character likeable from first appearance and created some wonderfully relatable moments.

However, at the heart of the show is a story of acceptance, change, and being true to ones-self in the face of adversity. This message couldn’t be more relevant in the current landscape and helps shine a light on issues facing many diverse groups in our society.

Kinky Boots is playing for a limited season at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne and tickets are available through Ticketek.
