The new $997 John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2016 Edition Luncheon
There’s not much that so tantalises the senses as the mysterious nectar they call whisky. Wild, smoky and beautiful, akin to the bleak rolling hills of the Highlands from whence it originally hailed, it has intrigued and allured the senses of many a man in its wake.
Type in the Scottish highlands into Google and what pours forth not only justifies why John Walker and his most mysterious whisky is awash in our hearts as well as palate for time immemorial, but, in a small proportion of staggering beauty, just a wee inkling of the rugged, sprawling and unyielding prowess of an untamed part of the world. No wonder the whisky that originates in its midst is uncompromising in standard, affect and quality. The Scots have always been made of sturdy stuff, why should not their produce be the same?
Surprisingly, and fortunately for whisky aficionados and amateurs alike, since Mr. John Walker and his sons roamed the breweries, orchestrating experimentation and genius in blissful synergy, there has seemed to no slackening of pace, no dulling of verve, no complacency in innovation. Under the watchful, unrelenting vigour of their master blender, oh so aptly named, Jim Beveridge, Johnnie Walker has been making immense strides in the arena of whisky.
One such discernable and beguiling exhibition of the technical, procedural and aromatic applications Walker whisky has been undertaking, comes in the form of their finite proffering of the Private Collection. Amongst a world population of 7 billion, only 8,888 bottles are sent out to thirsting palates.
THE F was invited to sample one precious decanter of the 2016 Private Collection Edition. All were ushered into the space, subtle, subdued lighting conjured up visions, oil baron lairs of old or the gentry of Scotland, rich in pomp, luxury, character and wit. Yes, in the depths of the Baxter Inn, John Walker & Sons 2016 Private Collection nectar felt most aesthetically, atmospherically and emotionally at home.
2016 being the third instalment of the unique blend created at the hands of the master brewer, precedent is acknowledged but not by any measure a constraint.
With each passing year, new innovations in maturation, formulation, fermentation, re-vatting of flavours, synergistically hold sway within intrepid experimentation, what results is entirely unique in dynamism of note, flavour and beauty. It is not to age alone that whisky’s quality is to be indexed, John Walker & Sons in its vigorous pursuits of pushing the whisky sphere, has seen to it that process, experimentation and a touch of genius can make for its whiskies to be elegant, dynamic and experiential.
The acute, but potent few notes that constitute the 2016’s expression of fine honeyed notes are engaged in a dance. A dance on the tip, sides and depth of our palate, amicably and civilly interacting but decisively jostling for our notice, for our admiration. We would greatly endorse you to let the dance play out on your palate.
