John Walker & Sons Private Collection in Australia
Recently, leading international whisky expert Dave Broom launched the highly exclusive John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2015 Edition in Australia at a private dinner held at The Olsen in Melbourne, overlooking the city skyline.
Never have you thought anyone could know quite so much about whisky until you hear Broom speak about what clearly has been his life’s work.
On offer, two varieties of the John Walker & Sons collection from 2014 and 2015; between them was another story altogether.
Essentially, the 2014 batch sports a more wooded flavour. With a smoky character from three celebrated regions of Scotland, the 2014 works well neat – as any top notch whisky does – pairing well with darker red meats and simple, additional salads more than anything else. As a soupçon before a heavier onslaught of meals along the lines of duck, beef cheek or brisket, the 2014 is a warming and wholesome, full-bodied flavour, that allows the more-often-than-not richness of the meats really come to life.
The 2015, however, is a different story altogether. Fruity flavours punctuate the 2015 blend, honing-in on the richness of sweeter notes and different reactions on the tongue, in true John Walker & Sons style. It’s astounding just how many flavours can live inside a liquid. Something like the 2015 blend is better suited to desserts and the end of an evening as it is full bodied with many varying layers of complexity.
When paired with chocolate brownies and textured vanilla icecream, as well as a cheeseboard, the 2015 reacts with the sugars in the dessert to really bring about a different flavour combination that needs to be tasted to be understood.
On hand for the night was the National Johnnie Walker and Classic Malts Ambassador, Sean Baxter, alongside Broom to talk through the nature of whisky, its properties, the ins-and-outs and for those who are in-the-know, the science behind hitting the perfect mark of the blend of a range the likes of the John Walker & Sons Collection. Learning about whisky is no quick fix, but it is refreshing to see just how much something as fine can be so well adored.
The 2015 Edition is one of inimitable importance and grandeur. It is a limited release and has been bottled only 8,888 times, 250 bottles of which made their way to Australia.
The Collection’s 2015 Edition is presented in a deep red glass decanter with an angled cut to reflect the slanted label on the iconic JOHNNIE WALKER square bottle, and is set in a cream box with the story of the Rare Fruit Character of this blend.
The event was one of the first tastings in Australia of the new release, which will be exclusively available from Dan Murphy’s Australia nationwide from 18 May, RRP $888.00.
