starward distillery tour

Discover the home of Australian whisky at Starward’s new distillery and bar precinct

10 minutes from the heart of Melbourne lies a gem that embodies the spirit of Australian whisky-making: Starward Distillery. After winning 24 Double Gold medals in 2 years, Starward goes even bigger with its recent unveiling of a brand-new distillery tour and bar experience, whisky enthusiasts and novices alike are in for an immersive journey into the world of premium Australian whisky, that is unashamedly modern.

What sets Starward apart is its unique approach to whisky production, which harnesses the rich flavours of Australian wine country, local barley and a belief that whisky is for everyone. It’s also set apart thanks to being the only whisky in Australia that has a bar, bottling, distilling and ageing on site. Starward’s new distillery tour offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into creating their signature spirit. Visitors are invited on a guided exploration through the distillery’s state-of-the-art facilities, where every step of the whisky-making process is unveiled, from the sourcing of locally grown grains to the meticulous aging in Australian wine barrels, and yes, you get to taste every step of the way.

Starward Distillery visitors can also unwind and savour the fruits of Starward’s labor at the chic onsite bar, where a curated selection of their finest whiskies awaits. From smooth single malts to bold expressions aged in red wine barrels, plus cocktails and bar snacks (cheese pairs VERY well with whisky!), there’s something to tantalise every palate. Knowledgeable bartenders are on hand to provide insights into the tasting notes and nuances of each whisky, ensuring a memorable and personalised experience for every guest. The space is made for sharing and relaxing, something Starward founder, David Vitale, wanted to champion by creating a whisky that could be taken out of the special occasion cabinet and be put into the sharing cabinet.

Great whiskies talk about the place they’re made, and so does the food at Starward! For the first time, Starward will also offer a carefully curated food menu, inspired by Melbourne’s vibrant culinary scene and led by Head Chef Drew Traynor (ex Eau De Vie). Each dish is designed to work in harmony with the whisky, and feautures small plates and sharing dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients, with all producers located within a day’s drive of the distillery. The house baked spent barley bread with Pure Peninsula honey and whisky butter is a carb that will live rent free in your mind for days to come. We also recommend finishing the meal with the Affogato, which is paired with house Starward whisky and wattle seed ice-cream and ginger beer shortbread.

Tailored for both the seasoned whisky connoisseur as well as those eager to learn more, the new Starward Distillery and Bar introduces a world of seasonal and signature cocktails, showcasing the versatility of Starward whisky. From classic whisky sours to boilermaker pairings, each drink is crafted to highlight the nuanced flavours of Starward’s fruit forward, Melbourne- made whisky. Guests will also be able to choose from a curated selection of local wines and beers, celebrating the best of Victorian producers and Starward collaborators.

If that’s not enough, in an exciting first for Starward, a ‘Fill Your Own Bottle’ experience is the newest addition to the distillery’s repertoire, allowing whisky lovers to bottle their own Starward whisky under the guidance of a resident Starward expert. Pour straight from the barrel of your choosing and customise your own label to take home for yourself, as a gift for someone worthy.

Starward’s new distillery tour and bar epitomise the spirit of innovation and hospitality that defines the Australian whisky scene. It’s not just a journey through the production process; it’s an invitation to discover the soul of Australian whisky and create lasting memories with every sip.

Experience the magic of the Islands of Tahiti with a Mana Mindset

When stepping onto the sandy shores of The Islands of Tahiti, visitors are immediately engulfed in a distinctive essence known as Mana. This concept, deeply embedded in the culture of French Polynesia, acts as the life force and spirit permeating through every aspect of the islands’ heritage and lifestyle. For travellers, adopting a Mana mindset opens up a unique approach to exploring not just Tahiti but any new destination, particularly emphasising the importance of respect for nature, engagement with local culture and spirituality, support for community initiatives, and the practice of mindfulness.

Respect Nature

The Islands of Tahiti are a haven for eco-friendly and sustainable experiences designed to forge a close bond with nature while ensuring its preservation for future generations. Leading the charge in marine conservation efforts are organisations like Te mana o te moana and Association Coral Gardens, which offer visitors a chance to participate in coral restoration projects, waste clean-up drives, and educational outreach programs. Eco-conscious accommodations range across the islands, from Tahiti’s Intercontinental Tahiti Resort & Spa with its protected Lagoonarium to the fully Polynesian-owned Le Bora Bora and Le Tahaa by Pearl Resorts, where initiatives like the solar-powered Okeanos Pearl catamaran and coral nurseries underline their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Embrace Spirituality and Culture

Understanding and integrating the Mana mindset also involves an immersion into the rich cultural tapestry and spirituality of Tahiti. The islands are alive with traditional music, dance, crafts, and storytelling, offering travellers a profound sense of place and history. Cultural immersion tours like those offered by Moorea Maori Tours present an opportunity to engage in traditional activities such as fishing aboard an outrigger canoe and preparing traditional dishes like poisson cru. Additionally, the recent opening of cultural institutions such as the Musée De Tahiti Et Des Îles and the Écomusée – Te Fare Natura in Moorea provide deeper insight into the islands’ heritage.

Support Community

For an authentically Polynesian experience, staying in Tahitian guesthouses offers a unique opportunity to connect with local families and gain a genuine insight into life in Tahiti. Beyond the walls of conventional hotels, these family-owned pensions deliver a personal touch, often integrating guests into daily activities and offering guided excursions that highlight the natural beauty and adventure of the islands. Supporting local businesses and tours further promotes a sustainable local economy, fostering a deeper connection between travellers and the community.

Practice Mindfulness

Being in Tahiti with a Mana mindset includes engaging in practices of mindfulness and wellness. The islands offer a plethora of rejuvenating experiences, from the traditional Polynesian taurumi massage and spa treatments to meditation sessions set against the backdrop of lush, tropical gardens. Such practices not only enhance personal well-being but also foster a deeper appreciation for the natural and cultural beauty of Tahiti.

In sum, travelling to The Islands of Tahiti with a Mana mindset goes beyond mere tourism; it’s an immersive experience that respects the natural environment, celebrates cultural richness, supports local communities, and nourishes the soul. This approach to travel not only ensures a more meaningful and memorable trip but also contributes to the preservation and appreciation of this paradise on earth.

Botanist Gin hosts clean-up event at Bondi Beach

In a commendable nod to Earth Day 2024, The Botanist Gin is taking a stand against plastic pollution with an inspiring beach clean-up event slated for the 21st of April at the iconic Bondi Beach. Aligning with this year’s Earth Day theme, ‘Planet vs. Plastics’, the initiative is not just timely but highly relevant. The event extends an open invitation to those aged 18 and above, encouraging community members to step forward in the battle against ocean pollution.

Adding to the allure of the day is the presence of Harrison Reid from Bondi Rescue, who has partnered with The Botanist Gin as a brand ambassador for this significant cause. His commitment to ocean conservation is set to galvanize participants, driving the message home about the critical need to safeguard Australia’s pristine beaches. The clean-up is not only about beautifying the beach but also about instilling a collective sense of responsibility towards our environmental footprint.

The Botanist Gin, known for its deep-rooted commitment to sustainable practices, mirrors this ethos in its event by rewarding participants’ efforts with tokens redeemable for refreshingly crisp The Botanist Gin and Tonic or a martini at Hotel Ravesis. This gesture not only acknowledges their hard work but also offers a chance to unwind and reflect on the impact of their actions.

Owing to its B Corp certification, The Botanist Gin’s overarching ethos is sustainability, which it practices through various means such as energy conservation, responsible agriculture, promoting biodiversity, and employing eco-friendly packaging. The ‘The Botanist Gin Beach Clean-Up’ is a testament to their unwavering dedication to fostering a healthier planet on social, economic, and environmental levels.

Cristobal de la Rubia, Brand Manager of The Botanist Gin, encapsulates the spirit behind the initiative, stating, “Our beach clean-up event is not merely about picking up litter; it’s a call to strengthen the bond within the community and nurture a responsible attitude towards our environment. Partnering with Harrison Reid and connecting with people who are as passionate about protecting Australia’s natural beauty as we are is truly exciting.”

The event seeks not only to clean up Bondi Beach but to elevate the conversation around environmental conservation and motivate individuals towards adopting more sustainable lifestyles. With Australia boasting some of the globe’s most magnificent beaches, The Botanist Gin’s commitment to their preservation is laudable and necessitates widespread support.

Participants are encouraged to gather at Hotel Ravesis by 12pm to collect their clean-up kits before heading to the beach. Upon completing their clean-up, they’ll exchange their collected rubbish for tokens, concluding the day with a rewarding cocktail back at Hotel Ravesis.

Event Details:

Review: And Juliet musical at Sydney Lyric Theatre

A whirlwind of vibrant scenes, dazzling costumes, and infectious music; & Juliet at Sydney Lyric Theatre has proven every bit as fabulous as promised. The reimagining of Shakespeare’s timeless tale with a contemporary twist, breathes new life into the age-old narrative and debates what Juliet does next if she hadn’t died. Directed by the visionary Luke Sheppard, this two and a half hour musical extravaganza takes audiences on a journey through love, self-discovery, and the pursuit of happiness, all set to your favourite tracks from 00’s.

The set work for & Juliet are a spectacle to behold. Immediately you’re drawn in with the larger than life lettering, and the cast navigate the stage with ease. Covering everything from the bustling streets of Verona to the glittering lights of Paris, each setting is meticulously crafted to transport viewers into the heart of the story. The dynamic use of stage design and innovative technology creates an immersive experience, allowing the audience to feel fully immersed in the world of the characters. We don’t want to give too many spoilers away about where Juliet’s journey takes her, but the Paris soirée act is a magical stand out!

Perhaps more than the sets, the costumes had us GAGGING on our jealousy. Think Renaissance Hip-Hop (AKA Bridgerton meets Tupac!). The blended fits were giving and played a pivotal role in bringing the characters to life. Designed by Paloma Young, the costumes are a vibrant fusion of period and contemporary styles, reflecting the characters’ personalities and while Juliet’s iconic ball gown is a stunning masterpiece, the ensemble cast’s wardrobe is equally impressive, and we developed a huge crush on Imani Williams who plays Lucy.

The cast is quite the stellar line up, with Casey Donovan, Amy Lehpamer, Rob Mills (who sadly wasn’t performing the night we went), and Lorinda May Merrypor, plus SO many more! It’s hard to choose a favourite, although Hayden Tee as Lance had us in clutching our pearls and squealing in delight. We’ll need a few more watches (yes, this is a show you’ll want to see again and again!) to enjoy each character fully.

Of course the heart of & Juliet though lies its electrifying soundtrack, featuring reimagined pop hits, covering everything from Katy Perry to The Backstreet Boys (you will never listen to ‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)’ without giggling again). The songs are expertly woven into the fabric of the story, amplifying the characters and creating a cult classic. If you caught Moulin Rouge the musical and loved it, this is along the same vein and absolutely addicting.

& Juliet is a triumph of modern musical theatre, blending spectacle, style, and substance to create an unforgettable theatrical experience. With its captivating scenes, stunning costumes, and infectious music, this production breathes new life into Shakespeare’s classic tale, appealing to audiences of all ages. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the Bard or simply looking for a night of entertainment, & Juliet is a must-see musical that will leave you dancing in the aisles. The run is only until June 16, so get tickets while you can directly from the & Juliet site.
