How to do black tie according to Olie Arnold the style director at MR PORTER.
NET-A-PORTER and MR PORTER together with the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) recently partnered for the inaugural MAAS Centre for Fashion Ball, earlier in February.
As part of the announcement, MR PORTER’s Style Director Olie Arnold and NET-A-PORTERS Global Buying Director Elizabeth von der Golz were named as the evenings main representatives, so we had to pick his brain about black tie and where it stands in 2018.
The Centre for Fashion Ball brought together the Australian fashion industry to celebrate the sector and raise awareness to produce and preserve fashion for generations to come.
On black tie and all things formal wear, Olie had this to say…

Is there such a thing as ‘too formal’ when attending a black tie event?
No, it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed when attending a black tie event. Don’t be that guy who looks like they didn’t read the invite or couldn’t be bothered.
For those people who don’t already own a tux, where would you recommend they start? And what should they be looking for?
Start with the jacket. You can always pair of black wool trousers and white formal shirt that you probably already own in your wardrobe, but a jacket will make it extra special. Oh, and invest in a bow tie.
What are your thought on tails for black tie events? Yes or no and why?
Personally I wouldn’t wear them as I find them very traditional. However, when it’s required, you can still bring it up to date with the right choice of colour palette (black most of the time), shoes and accessories.

Do you have any tips or tricks for tailoring your pants and fining the right break length?
You should never really have more than one break, if you do, they’re too long. It should not touch the sole at the back and just cover the first lace hole on the shoe.
What kind of accessories would you suggest to pair back with a tux?
Many tuxedo trousers come with a satin waistband so there’s no real need for a cummerbund. I always think that dress studs on shirts are very chic and are a subtle way to show you know your stuff.
Bow tie or tie and why?
Bow tie every time. It may feel strange at first as it’s not something most wear every day, but they really help make the occasion.
What’s the difference between one or two vents? Where would you wear either and why?
Vents are for comfort and silhouette. Depending on what look you want to achieve and your physique, depends on how many vents you have. Two is always safer and more traditional.
What is your ideal black tie outfit?
I switch between either an all-black, slim fit tux or a midnight blue number. Kingsman and Thom Sweeney do both brilliantly.
