Gold Coast travel guide: How to make the most of the Queensland city with Avani Broadbeach

Travelling to Queensland is an Aussie’s favourite pastime. And if the past five years are anything to go by for the Gold Coast, just an hour south of the capital Brisbane, it’s the favourite pastime of thousands of tourists and teens, too.

In the past five years, the GC has become unrecognisable, as locals would have it, and is rapidly taking the crown as one of the country’s favourite oceanside destination for rest and relaxation around the continent thanks in large part to its new hotels, resorts and huge developments like Pacific Fair.

The Avani Broadbeach is one of those sparkly new establishments to join the rise of the Gold Coast region in Broadbeach that is contributing to the rise of the GC as it’s willingly giving its visitors the Keys to the City.

It’s a premium hotel chain that has 20 hotels and resorts around the world, which the Gold Coast now gets to benefit from. They’re all about self-contained apartments, pillowy beds, insanely spacious rooms and living spaces and enough striking views to make you dizzy if you stare for too long. It’s basically heaven.

In a funky new initiative by the Avani hotel name, they’ve turned over the best bits of being a tour guide of the Broadbeach City to its locals, connecting them with Avani guests using the old faithful Facebook Messenger app.

By simply scanning a Messenger QR code, you’re transported to a live chat with a local expert to gather all the ideas of what to do at any time, any day, from anywhere. For those of us who know nothing about the area, it’s a sensational idea.

On a two day weekend away in the sunshine state, it can make for quite the handy travel companion when you’ve got no idea about what’s good or how to get there.

Where to have brunch in the Gold Coast

Cafe suggestions like Elk Espresso and Bam Bam Bakehouse are some of the best Broadbeach has to offer and a couple of the best go-tos when you’ve given the Keys to the City.

Elk Espresso rocks some seriously Scandinavian-inspired interiors and contemporarily complex menu that is simple to read and order, but a damn flavoursome experience to go through once you’ve picked your perch.

With compressed chipboard tables, wooden decorations and a giant elk emblazoned on the wall, the cafe isn’t much longer for its current location, but the quality of food, coffee and desserts makes it worth travelling to the ends of the Gold Coast for.

Meanwhile, Bam Bam Bakehouse is the hot spot that is popular with the celebrities that visit the Gold Coast and it’s easy to see why.

Think contemporary food with highlights like violent hummus, poached eggs, all kinds of croissants and fried chicken for brunch – what can go wrong?

Moving on to evening time feeds, the Gold Coast and Broadbeach region is ideal. Some suggestions by Avani look as good as the likes of Mamasanfor example. It’s known for its Malaysian influence, but could easily constitute all kinds of ‘Asian’ cuisine, working with delicious pork san choi bau, slow-cooked lamb rack and sumptuous pork belly. It’s a must-visit.

Though for those who aren’t driven by quality oven produce and the magic a man with a beard can conduct behind an espresso machine, then daytime activities are often a pretty good way to go.

Before a quick check-in at the Avani Broadbeach, which does come complete with pool, gym and striking views, activities in the Gold Coast are relatively boundless.

Where to drink in the Gold Coast

Once you’ve relaxed and recovered, drinks are on the menu and there are refreshingly many places on the list in Broadbeach that are worth a visit.

By jumping onto the Avani Messenger chat, the suggestions are plentiful and 100% worth the trip, all a pleasantly short walk from the Avani Broadbeach.

The Garden Bar at The Star casino Broadbeach – Outdoors, astro-turfed and massive, this watering hole is insanely popular on a Saturday night. Whether you’re in the mood to play oversized Jenga or a drunken game of ping-pong, the casino has you covered.

Soho Place – Reminiscent of the prohibition era bars that plagued the nightlife of the big cities of the world, the Soho way is dark, mood-lit, cocktail driven and comfortable to try. Its bartenders are good-looking, friendly, can make a good espresso martini (the true testament of an aficionado’s skill) and it’s affordable.
