Exciting New Changes For Opera Australia’s 2017 Season

Opera Australia knows how to put on an impressive performance. No holds are barred from their repertoire of many of the world’s most renowned and enjoyed operatic performances on rote. From costumes to sets, cast and skill pool, the line-up of Opera Australia over the past 60 years has been stellar and attracted enough attention in its own right as a production company, let alone what it produces.

After an inevitably successful season through 2016, their 2017 season has been announced between Melbourne and Sydney and leaves nothing wanting. Due to the long-coming refurbishment of the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney leg of the season will be scattered around the city in numerous other new and exciting locations.

It’s a new time for OA, but as Lyndon Terracini, artistic director of OA says, an exciting one.

“The six-month closure of the Joan Sutherland Theatre in the Sydney Opera House due to much-needed maintenance has presented many challenges, but challenges often demand that we respond in a creative manner. In 2017 you will see Opera Australia on the move as we perform in different venues as well as familiar places.”

Here’s what’s on its way…

  • Jonas Kaufmann, renowned opera singer, will perform in Australia for the first time in Wagner’s Parsifal
  • The Merry Widow stars Melbourne soprano, Danielle De Niesse
  • King Roger will star Albanian tenor, Saimir Pirgu, who was mentored by the legendary Luciano Pavarotti
  • Acclaimed Australian soprano Greta Bradman enters new territory as she performs in her first opera as Mimi in La Bohe?me
  • Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour returns in 2017 with one of the most well-known and loved operas of all time, Bizet’s Carmen.
