The East London Paddington is an east-west fusion that will blow your mind

The London Tavern in Paddington is one of those locals’ hideaways that up until recently, stayed that way.

It’s tucked away off the beaten path, conveniently on a corner, isn’t massive, but is nice enough to want to go to and consists of a pub on the ground floor and a sensational Cantonese and generally ‘Asian’ inspired restaurant, East London, on the top floor you’d never expect.

Why is it called the East London? Easy. The eastern influence of the Orient joins with the western influence of a traditional(ish) Londoners’ pub atmosphere right in the heart of trendy Paddington to really epitomise what it means to be a cultural fusion.

Up the stairs, the place becomes somewhat more of a tranquil escape from the pubby vibe of the ground floor, which is more than welcome. It’s mood-lit, spacious, oddly Japanese in aesthetic for a Chinese-inspired food offering, but sensational nonetheless.

The menu shadows that of sister venue China Diner in Bondi (and now Double Bay) with a slightly more refined atmosphere while maintaining the same welcoming personality and relaxed space.

They offer traditionally favourite Chinese dishes like sticky pork belly, a uniquely ocean-fresh flavoured wontons with bug meat, prawn, chilli and Sichuan pepper, alongside the most rich-in-flavour san choy bau with prawns, snow peas and corn and everyone’s favourite bang-bang chicken, to mention a few.
