The COO of Dior, Serge Brunschwig, opened the exhibition at the media exclusive (all the way from France) saying he was very “moved” by the community effort and engagement.

To celebrate the opening, NGV welcomes artisans from the Christian Dior Couture atelier in Paris, who will be working on couture garments in the exhibition space during the first and last weeks (a must-see).

Iconic cocktail dresses, bar coats, evening dresses and more represent the distinct and important stages in the couture house’s history and include designs by Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri.

The exhibition also features accessories, sketches, photographs, haute couture toiles (prototypes) and a bewildering display of multimedia – which is impressive to say the least. Think huge displays and amazing fast-moving images of runways featuring Dior.

Christian Dior Couture president, Sidney Toledano, said the gallery’s modern exhibition was a historic moment.

“This exhibition will be the biggest Dior retrospective ever held in Australia,” he said.

“It will cover seventy years of creation, presenting the emblematic work of Christian Dior and his successors, including Maria Grazia Chiuri, who arrived last July and is the first woman at the head of the couture house.”

Dior’s life and history expressed in dresses

“In a machine age, dressmaking is one of the last refuges of the human, the personal, the inimitable,” Dior said.

But it’s more than just the Dior everyone has come to know and love – Christian Dior is one of the finest designers of his generation.

Dior, the name, stands out in fashion history and runs much deeper than just the elegant designs.

They were revolutionary, because Dior was one of the first to celebrate femininity and elegance after the horrors of World War II.

This iconic spring-summer collection, which debuted in 1947, is highlighted throughout the exhibition in so many fabulous ways by narrating the rich history of the fashion house.

Included are Christian Dior’s early influences, the design codes synonymous with Dior, and the milestones of its six successive designers following Christian Dior’s sudden death in 1957.

The exhibition will also explore Dior’s especial rapport with Australia, including the history-making 1948 spring fashion parade at David Jones in Sydney. This was an exceptional event because it was the first representative Dior collection to be shown outside of Paris. Lucky us!

Step into the dazzling world of Dior

The exhibition also features a section dedicated to fabulous and innovative accessories, particularly shoes and millinery. The room highlights the work of Stephen Jones, who created intricate headpieces for John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri.

Possibly the most darling feature of the NGV exhibition designs to showcase the Dior collection is the grand, sweeping staircase leading to a mezzanine level which visitors can enjoy the birds-eye view of the sparkling array of designs perfectly placed around the gallery. The feature is inspired by the iconic staircase from the Paris couture house that featured in many famous photoshoots and fashion parades over Dior’s seventy-year history.

The gallery has also commissioned and acquired two Dior haute couture dresses, Essence d’Herbier and Look 10, Bar coat which will also be on display.

Another highlight of the exhibition is supermodel Miranda Kerr’s gorgeous custom-designed wedding dress which featured delicate lily-of-the-valley organza embroidery by Dior’s Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri. Not to be missed.
