Organic Skincare for men; no Bull

What you smear on your face depends very much on what type of skin you have.

Whether it’s loaded with chemicals that actively do something to make your skin better, or softened with organic ingredients to maintain what you’ve got; it’s entirely up to the user.

I gave Bulldog skin care’s range a trial run over the past few months and have to say that for an easy-to-access, doesn’t-require-much-informing like skin care range, it’s up there with some of the best I’ve used.

Bulldog plays on the notion of skincare being the ‘bulldog’ or ‘a man’s best friend’ , which is very witty and something I think I love most about the brand.

I had a chance to have a chin wag with Simon Duffy, the man behind the Bulldog skincare brand on what it’s all about…

Why Bulldog?

For us, the Bulldog represents all of the positive attributes of men. Yes, he may not have a rippling six-pack – in fact he’s a little overweight and quite wrinkly – but he’s also tenacious, loyal, honest, hard working and protective. We believe that our products contain all these qualities, which is why we sum the range up as man’s best friend. I believe that our customers identify more with the characteristics of the Bulldog than the unattainable images of ridiculously ripped models or sports stars that most men’s brands use.

What drove you to develop something that spoke to not only you but also your market in skincare?

When we were developing Bulldog, we found that the choices for male skincare products offered by the typical mainstream brands were actually incredibly boring.  This is right through from their conventional formulations to the way they market their products as “For Men” versions of traditionally female brands.

I believe that men are frustrated by the lack of skincare products that are purpose built for their needs. Men have thicker skin than women so the formulations used in female products will not produce similar results in male skin. We decided to do things differently and set out to create skincare products that are purpose-built for men, using natural ingredients that really work.

Why are organic skin care ranges better than stronger, more chemically enhanced ones? Is it in fact better, or does it come down to how each person’s skin reacts?

At Bulldog, we have ensured through relentless product development and refinement that we are offering the very best natural skincare products on the market. We want men to care as much about what they put on their skin as the food they eat. This has inspired customer loyalty and our range has won numerous product awards for its performance.

Our products are body friendly, meaning they don’t contain controversial man-made chemicals such as parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, artificial colours or synthetic fragrances. Instead, Bulldog products are loaded with essential oils and other natural ingredients to deliver superb grooming results.

Let me give you an example of the way we think about making our products: Sodium laureth sulfate is the synthetic chemical that is typically used to make shower gels and face washes foam. It’s also a known skin irritant. We’ve replaced that chemical with natural ingredients derived from coconuts and we think they do a better job.

What is the most important part of a man’s skincare regime?

Whenever men ask me how to start building their own grooming regime, my advice is always the same; try using our Original Moisturiser and our Original Face Wash.  I’m convinced that in just a few weeks their skin will look and feel healthier.

Most men who are yet to venture past soap and water don’t realise that soap dries their skin because of the harsh chemicals used in standard soap formulation. A much better idea would be to use our Original Face Wash, which you can buy nationwide in Woolworths and Priceline. We designed this product to be a gentle but effective facial cleanser that is non-drying. It will leave your face feeling refreshed and free from dirt and debris.

Follow up with our Original Moisturiser, which has become something of a hero in our range. I think it does so well because of its brilliant performance. We use eight essential oils to give the product our refreshingly masculine signature fragrance, as we cram in four powerful natural ingredients to deliver superb results.

Obviously Bulldog is comparatively new. Tell me where you want to take the brand.

Bulldog currently sells our range in 11 countries beyond the UK and Australia; Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, South Korea and USA.

Our main focus is to build a strong Bulldog presence in all of these countries and make men aware of the fact that they don’t have to compromise on ingredient quality or performance in order to buy affordable products.  Our ultimate goal is to put a Bulldog product in every bathroom in the world.
