Barzaari Marrickville Sydney

Barzaari is Mediterranean food in Marrickville done so well

Barzaari turns Mediterranean food on its head.

Conveniently in Marrickville, the rustic-yet-modern restaurant is urban, kind of grungy, but all the while welcoming and warm with a buzzing atmosphere all its own.

It’s a contemporary taste of Cyprus in the heart of Sydney’s Inner West that takes an earthy toned tack to presenting what it considers to be some of the best elements of Mediterranean cuisine to diners who clearly rate it highly.

From everything like the stoneware they serve their food on to the wine list from local and international vineyards, Barzaari is a thought-out and finely-tuned establishment that knows what it does and sets about doing it well.

The guy behind it, chef and co-owner Darryl Martin has piled his 20-year career onto Barzaari, combining his high-end, classic, French and modern Australian influences with the cuisine of his wife’s heritage – a mix of Cyprian and Lebanese.

The result is unmistakable.

With dishes like pork jowl and lamb neck, traditional staples like hummus, trendy additions such as brussels sprouts and desserts like the unmistakably delicate and unique-to-Barzaari, muhallebi-arak sorbet, candied fig, meringue and rose dessert, it’s a restaurant that isn’t afraid to push the bar a bit.

Capturing the food and culture of these rich traditions, Darryl aims to deliver a fresh offering of Eastern Mediterranean flavours infused with his contemporary Australian approach.

The sticky pork jowl with loukaniko, smoked eggplant and BBQ cos is one of Barzaari’s most popular dishes, alongside many of its items on the full vegetarian menu.

Couple that with its own mastic sour with gin, mastic, thyme, passionfruit, citrus and whites, you’ve got a sensational meal.

Since 2016, Barzaari has been offering up its unique take on Mediterranean dining and doesn’t look like it’s slowing down any time soon. See more at their website here.
