The annual festivities begin at midday at Munich Brauhaus The Rocks in Sydney, Munich Brauhaus South Wharf in Melbourne, and Bavarian Bier Cafe? Eagle Street Pier in Brisbane with ceremonial tappings of the first Oktoberfest bier kegs, which signal the commencement of inaugural Oktoberfest street parades in the three cities.

The parades are all about colourful collections of costumed entertainers singing, dancing and bringing a slice of Oktoberfest tradition to the streets.

Throughout the day another three kegs will be tapped, releasing the remaining official Oktoberfest biers and signalling the start of key festive events.

Festival-goers also fight for the title of Pork Knuckle Eating Champion by devouring the famous crispy Bavarian pork knuckle in the fastest time. The champion wins a $500 voucher and bragging rights. Also, delicious.
