Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Australian Premiere
Not quite bedecked in Lacroix but damn well as fine, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley took to Sydney’s pink carpet premiere of their silver screen debut, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. They looked nothing short of it, either.
It’s the first time on the big screen as their alter egos of 25 years ago, Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, fabulous PR and fashion personalities of the UK, which wound-up broadcast in 1996.
They re-emerged some years later for a revival series, but their latest hurrah is one to set a new benchmark.
If the drag queens, long-time fans, entertainers and designers present for the Australian leg of the movie’s premiere weren’t indication enough, time and all the Bollinger in the world hasn’t tarnished their popularity amongst fans.
“It’s easy!” said Saunders on her pink carpet parade. “We’re up to year 25 and we’ve always done something every four years, so it’s easy.”
The pair have been so influential through their work in the comedy space, that they’re proud of the fact their influence has resulted in people drinking and falling over a lot more in comedy. As Saunders mentioned, however, it’s unfortunate there aren’t more women in comedy… yet!
“We seemed extreme in 1991 and now we seem completely normal,” said Lumley with a laugh.
Thrilled with the reception they received from fans from all walks of life all over the world, Saunders and Lumley couldn’t be more proud.
“It’s rather lovely; we’ve had a nice reception!” explained Saunders warmly. “We owe them (fans) a lot ‘cos they kind of broke it in America for us; [and] we became a cult within the gay community, so it’s been fantastic!” she continued.
“They’ve been so supportive… of two old birds!” they both laughed.
Ever the diplomat and well-and-truly engrained into the Australian society, Saunders and Lumley made a point to include many familiar Australian faces in the film for varied cameos.
“I have to say you shouldn’t have a favourite, but if I did it has to be Dame Edna,” said Saunders. “I mean, she’s been in our lives and a heroine of mine for so long that she turned up… though, only to up-stage Joan Collins, I know that.”
“It made my life,” she said.
Nothing could quite top Lumley’s top moment in the film, though, something she’d agree would be one for the history books.
“Kate Moss was a cameo and special, as was Stella McCartney; but to be tasered by Rebel Wilson is something else,” she laughed.
And as for how they’ve kept it going for all these years through all the hangovers?
“More drink!” said Saunders. “Don’t ever let the hangover take over your life!”
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie is in cinemas around the country from Thursday 4 August 2016.
