A One-On-One Dinner With Tennis Legend Novak Djokovic

There is nothing more special than good food and company. ‘Our Table’ – a treated provided graciously by Jacob’s Creek in conjunction with the Australian Open and its overtaking of Melbourne – was an exclusive dinner hosted by professional tennis player Novak Djokovic, which celebrated exactly that. Purposed for the screening of a film starring the tennis great Made By Moments, the Melbourne only experience was a privilege.

Overhead faerie lights, large arched windows and touches of green foliage on the roof and tables added a spring type comfort to the basement of the fortyfivedownstairs venue in Melbourne’s heart. Jacob’s Creek teamed with 2012 Masterchef winner Andy Allen in the coming together of Novak’s dinner, playing host to sport and wine admirers alike.

A menu of grilled prawns with peperonata, succulent kangaroo with black cracked pepper and a hazelnut dacquoise, minted dark chocolate mousse, every dish was served was consistency and attention to detail. The slightly smoky barbeque cabbage and simplistic yet juicy kangaroo main was a standout of the night with a selection of Jacob’s Creek wines perfectly coupling every meal.

But beyond the extremely fulfilling dishes and the modernly-rustic white and grey decor it was Djokovic and his short films that stole the show. The first was a warm story about Djokovic and his food traditions with his family emphasising the significance in passing traditions to the next generations from, around and to the Slovakian heritage and his roots. The second was a light hearted memory of Djokovic’s first date with his wife, Jelena, and his confusion with ordering steak tartare.

Humorously reflecting back at his mistake of food choice and briefly speaking about the upcoming Australian open, Djokovic mainly enlightened his guests on the importance of a positive mindset and philosophy. He spoke about the comfort that needed to be gained about one’s body and the significance of family as an anchor. Funny and genuine Djokovic’s thoughts added a refreshing look on food and gatherings.

‘Our Table’ was a Jacob’s Creek event that was inspiring. It poured light on the joy that can come out of good food, family and friends. Whilst cooking, presenting and eating food is now a rushed, sometimes guilty and tedious chore in our busy lifestyles – Jacob’s Creek and Djokovic reminded every guest that the best things in life are things worth sharing and celebrating, and regardless of our situations, the most magical moments can be created at a dinner table.
